the pedometer doesn't lie!
Last Friday I bought a pedometer. I have recent read articles in both Real Simple and Oprah (the magazine) about how an active person should be taking 8,000-10,000 steps a day. Since I am working on new fitness goals for 2004, I thought this would be a simple place to start -- walk more. Well, yesterday I strapped the thing on and found that during my work day I walked less than 2,200 steps. No good. Then today I found I had walked 2,100 steps before I even arrived at the office. What's the dif? you ask. Yesterday, I drove to work. Today, walked to the Metro and road in. There is good news and bad news here.
Good news: I can increase my activity easily without a giant time suck, and save money at the same time. Parking in DC is expensive, parking at home is free. Healthy + Rich = Good
Bad news: I can't be lazy and ride along in my temperature controled car everyday. Plus I may have to wake up a little earlier to make sure I am at work on time when taking the train -- especially on G-town days. Tired + Cold = Sad
So, I resolve to drive to work no more than one day a week. Let's see how it goes.
