Oscar Night

I can't say that I am a big fan of Sunday nights. There is always a slight tinge sad anticipation of the Monday morning to come. That said I think watching the Oscars with on the couch is a damn good way to spend it. Speaking of the Oscars, why would Scarlett Johansson wear this ill-fitting dress?

I've has a really good weekend. Friday was bumming around with Flounder, Saturday was shoe shopping with Mi Mama -- followed up with a surprise birthday party for my 73 y/o Grandma Dee. The family gathered and it was good. And Sunday? Today it was bagels for brekkie, cleaning of my bedroom (Boy was it eve needed!) and house hunting again on Flounder's behalf. I think we got a bit closer on this trip. Good times all around.

In other news, I made a promise that I would have some research about going back to school done by today and I have only partially completed my task. Bad girl, *slaps hand* BAD! So what am I going to do about this failing? Set another deadline for myself and carry on. and so I shall.

Vent

I just have to take a moment to vent. My crappy old boss (thank God she left our office and I was reassigned!) just did her typical high-stress whirlwind act through the office. She does this super nice act I just can't stand while asking you to do rideculus requests in no time at all.

SHE DRIVE ME INSANE! Boy am I glad she doesn't work here anymore. Now, I just wish she would get out of here and leave me in peace.

The State of American Health

According to the National Centers for Health Statistics have put out a rather suprising report. It seems less people are obese today (22%) than were obese in 1999-2000 (35%). Good news! Check all the Smokeing, Weight and Alcohol stats.

State of American Health

The coming weekend is looking a little busy. Tonight and I will go to the gym and make dinner at his place. We did some major grocery shopping last night, so I have many cooking options at my disposal. Tomorrow, I am shoe shopping with Mi Mama and then helping her get ready for a birthday celebration for my grandmother that Mama is hosting. Flounder will be in attendance later that evening for the party. Sunday is cleaning up my house which needs some attention. Actually it is mostly just my room that needs the help. Since my room mate is ... well lets call her festidious, the rest of the place always looks nice. Exciting plan, huh? It will do. :)

As seen on jordsd's blog, I tried the Who is your secret Hogwarts Lover? quiz. Since Lucious Malfoy was the answer, I decided not to put the photo up. I hope you will forgive me.

Finally, do you ever feel scattered? I have so many thoughts flying through my head, I am having trouble
not following each one in a different direction. I think I will start writing as much of it down as I can so I can
focus on the work stuff I should be concentrating on. I hate it when this happens.

Palm Fun

I am very much looking forward getting started using the Palm again. I have been searching for software to help me manage my lists and checkbook. So far I have found SuperList3   and Money Tender -- the first to help me manage my lists, the second to act as a digital checkbook. The checkbook is especially great since I use my check card like cash, I have so many transactions in my checkbook that I am always running out of room.

The most exciting aspect of using the Palm will be playing Bubblet  again. This is only the most addictive game I have ever played. A great way to spend a commute -- or a road trip with the Storybook Family. :)

Lend me some sugar, I'm your neighbor!

Had a fab time with DK last night making CDs. I was so taken with his collection that I started pulling music into two playlists -- Workout Music and Other Music I wanted. After I filled both lists up to the 160 mg point, I started dividing them up to fit on CDs. As bad luck would have it, as soon as I had the Workout Music divided into 2 lists, I accidentally deleted one. UGH! There goes an hour of music hunting. Thank God the other lists didn't fall to the same fate.

Thanks to my new CDs I was able to listen to Hey Ya! three times in a row on the way into work. That's a damn good way to start a day, I have to tell you.

What else is going on? I am hunting eBay for accessories for the Palm M100, and today I need to go pickup some comfy headphones. I hate those earbuds, they are always to large and hurt my poor ears.

Sweat

Despite my bold assertions, and I didn't go to the gym last week. We did however go to the gym last night. When we went last I used the elyptical machine for 16 minutes (sad I know), but last night I made it for 20! I really helped that I had water with me. I got my heart rate up and was feeling pretty good about myself before I was done. If we go tonight (explination as to why we might not go in a mo.) I will aspire to 25 minutes, though I will settle for 20 again if I can get it. There is a scale in the corner of the gym that I keep eyeing. Perhaps I will weight myself tonight so I can get a baseline...or maybe I will just continue to eye it wearily.

Tonight I have plans with DK to gack some of his music. He has quite the digital music collection that I plan to take advantage of. You see, I am having a smidge of trouble staying motivated on the workout equipment while watching 7th Heaven and Wheel of Fortune on the communal TV.  DK is kindly coming to my aid. All the music I own is rather down tempo. I will pick out the most rocking of music he has to keep me going. Yay!

In other positive news, my friend S in the UK (still havn't come up with a moniker for her -- S any ideas?) has kindly agreed to lend back to me the old PDA that I originally lent to her. Acutally I guess I gave it to her since we made a trade -- her cell phone for my PDA. This time around we are trading Norah Jones and Snack Food for the PDA. I am hoping it helps me with my list managment issues. I have become a list making fool! Good for organization in general, but now I need help managing my lists. Does it never end? If I find success using the old PDA (Palm M100) I will eventually upgrade to something more powerful. If it doesn't work for me, why throw good money after bad?

Also I just talked to Mi Mama and she wants to start walking during our lunch breaks. We only work a couple block away from each other, so it wouldn't be hard to organize. As a diabetic, she really finds a midday walk helps keep her blood sugar low. I haven't agreed yet, I am pretty sure I will do it.

Reasons to do it:
1) Walking at lunch will keep me moving on days when the gym doesn't happen.
2) Since the entre of Flounder, I haven't seen as much of Mi Mama as I used to, so it will be good time to catch up.
3) She offered to buy me new walking shoes to keep at the office -- and while I may be lazy, I am not stupid! :*)
4) Perhaps this will encourage me to put my pedometer (currently sitting on my desk where it has been for a few weeks now!) back on my belt.

Lord am I ever inconsisent. I drive myself crazy!

Must get more sleep -- I am having trouble keeping my eyes open this morning. Coffee, yes coffee, that's the ticket!

Sunday

Friday night, Yess came into town. As always, it was wonderful to see her again. It is a beautiful thing to like your boyfriends best friend so much. I am very lucky!

Saturday the three of us went out for breakfast. MMMmmmm pancakes. Then we went up to Ellicott City and did some antiquing. I bought a lovely red hat that I like very much for only $15 at Rugs to Riches. I was very pleased. We also discovered an awesome house-wears/design boutique called What's In Store. I wish this place had a website. It is ultra cool and over run with atmosphere. Sadly we had to head back a little early because of my dinner plans.

Dinner at Bambi and Yoda's place Saturday night was delightful. I am never home and often miss seeing my room mate and I I haven't had much chance to see Condorman recently either, so we had a great time. The only downside was that Condorman didn't bring his girlfriend R. He has promised she will be introduced to the group in the near future, but I am getting a little antsy. How can they have been going out for 7 or 8 months now and I haven't met her? When it come to affairs of the heart, I am rather protective of my friends. I am sure she id great, and Condorman seems very happy, but I want to MEET HER! I will have to make that happen.

In other news, if equal rights for Gay Americans is important to you, I encourage you to visit www.millionformarriage.com and sign their petition.

Impulse buy!

Ebay has got me again. On a total impulse, I just bought a new jewelry box. At less than $30 I think I did pretty well! Yippee!

Posted by La at 2:22 PM | Comments (0)

Why?

First, let me say I am very happy it is Friday and I have such a lovely weekend ahead of me.
Secondly, why is everything I want in life so expensive? I should probably point out at this point that I love stuff. I fight my urdge to collect cute, trendy, usful and interesting stuff on an almost daily absis. Examples of wonderful, but expensive stuff I desire:

1. Apple iPod
2. Everything made by Horchow. I especially admire the Inital Cards -- topping out at almost $130.00 and "Rosine" Quilt for a low, reasonable price of $759.90.
3. The previously mentioned Laurel Desk from Pottery Barn.
4. Of course there is the college education I am seeking, for a solid $20,000 - 40,000.

Oh, I know there are more too...but my little brain refuses to dwell any futher on what I do not have. Let's instead look at what I do have!

1. A wonderful brother who is not in jail.
2. A job, which does no light my fire, but does pay the bills and isn't driving my insane.
3. The very fabulous , the love of my life.
4. A running vehical. Very usefull.
5. My health!
6. I forum to whine in. :)

Enough babble. On to the...

I have never read this book, but OK!

You're Ulysses!

Most people are convinced that you don't make any sense, but compared to what else you could say, what you're saying now makes tons of sense. What people do understand about you is your vulgarity, which has convinced people that you are at once brilliant and repugnant. Meanwhile you are content to wander around aimlessly, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. What you see is vast, almost limitless, and brings you additional fame. When no one is looking, you dream of being a Greek folk hero.

Rather Good

Well I have managed to accomplish one thing before, my team meeting begins. The cell Phone voicemail is now set up. Hurrah!

Also, last night my roomamte informed me that the rat like things you see singing in the current Quizno's commercails are creations of rathergood.com. I still think they are freaky.

A baby step forward

A few good things to report:

1. Micah has still not been arrested or charged with auto theft. V. good.

2. My   and I are going to the gym tonight and if we are very good we will go again on Friday and Sunday as well . Excellent.

3. It looks like the wonderful Yess is coming down to visit this Saturday. Lovely.

4. Saturday evening I have dinner plans at Bambi and Yoda's house, where I will finally get to meet their new puppy. Fab.

5. I have collected some more info about our local college to go over this weekend. Flounder has made it his personal mission to make sure I realize my goal of going back to school, so hopefully seeing me flipping through a college catolog will please him. Nice.

6. Today's goal? To setup the voicemail on my cell phone. That should please everyone. Hurrah!

Wonderful Weekend

As der_flounder noted, he and I got away to Colonial Williamsburg this President's Day weekend to celebrate Valentine's day. I should mention that this is the second time I have attempted to update my LJ with news from this weekend. The first time around the entry was lost due to user error (oops!) so I may skim the experience a bit. Bear with me.

We took our time heading out on Saturday and didn't arrive in Williamsburg until after 4:00. We checked in and headed over to the Visitor Center conveniently right next door. There we discovered that for a mere additional $8 each we could get passes to the colonial area, for a whole year. Well! Flounder is a history geek, and I love a good costume drama, so of course we went for it. After reveling in our good luck, we settled in and dressed for dinner. We dined on authentic colonial fair at Christiana Campbell's Tavern. The meal was delicious and lit by candle light. A wonderful meal including spoonbread, slaw and giant napkins tied around our necks (like you do!). Photos were taken and perhaps if we feel like giving the world a good laugh, Flounder might post them. :)

Sunday was tour day! We lucked out that the weather was quite nice. Cold certainly, but not too chilly to walk around outside. We started off at the Governor's Palace and wandered our way around D.O.G. Street -- Market Square, the Court House and various shops selling wares and instructing the patrons how the various items were made. The Print Shop was the most dangerous, not because of any harm that might befall one there, but because of the maps. You see, my dear Flounder is a great collector of maps old and new. Such is his passion that I fear there will come a day when not a wall or surface of his home will go unadorned. Thusly, I remain concerned whenever we enter an area that is as riddled with printing of historic documents as the Print shop was. Amazingly, we did escape without purchasing anything in this shop, but don't dare think we returned home without a map my friend, hardly. After lunch we visited The Public Hospital and the Dewitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. I was surprised to see how fake jewels were make of paste back in the day (paste does NOT a diamond make!) and they had a wide array of period ceramics. Soon we rushed back to Market Square so that we might not miss the parade. The Salute to the Presidents included the parade of a fife and drum corp. and a cannon salute to our nation's presidents. Oh, the pageantry! There were even a few (fake) Presidents in attendance.

That evening after dinner, we proceeded to the Kimball theater to attend An Election Year Evening with the Presidents. The actors who portrayed the presidents Washington, Jefferson and Madison were on stage fielding questions regarding the birth of our nation and their intentions when founding the country. The classic part however came when in a surprise appearance FDR was rolled out on stage. If only you could have seen Washington's face when it was mentioned that FDR had been elected for four terms. Classic indeed. Upon leaving the theater, we found a lovely and picturesque veil of snow had fallen on the town. Perfect.

Monday, we attempted to do some outlet shopping but just weren't tempted by what we found. Instead we headed home to beat the traffic. All in all a wonderful time. I look forward to doing it again (as we must now that we have Freedom Passes!) and catching what we missed this time around.

Oops! I forgot!

Quote of the Day:
"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable…The only safe place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers of love…is Hell."

Feels Like Home

I picked up the new Norah Jones album. I just couldn't hold out any longer, the media blitz was getting to me. So far I am really enjoying it. Sunrise is my favorite thus far, but I will report back as I hear more.

Last night, and I, in a bold step toward being healthier, went to the gym! Whooo! Given that I have gained about 15 pounds since last June, I figured it was about time to do something. In this case "something" took the form of 16 grueling minutes on the eleptical machine and another 5 or so on the bike. I know I can do a least 30 once I get into the swing again, but for last night, 16 was pushing myself for sure. I stretched when I was done, and so far there is no soreness. I am a giant wimp I know, but I am pleased by this tiny progress.

Tonight, Mi Mama is cooking Flounder a belated birthday dinner. What did my darling choose to have? Breakfast for dinner, including Creme Brulee French Toast! It is damn good stuff, but oc course Mi Mama is a wonderful cook. If only she would teach me! :)

Nothing new to report on Micah's legal woes. No arrests, no motion, very frustrating!

I had better get to work. Since Flounder and I are escaping for a long weekend, I won't be in the office on Monday. Time to go earn my money!

By Golly it's RED!

I have had the same winter coat for 3 or 4 years now, heck maybe longer. It is a slim down coat, not too puffy (BEWARE! STAYPUFFED GIRL!), but plenty warm. It is red, well it was red when I bought it. Lately it had become terribly dingy. Wearing it on the Metro everyday had left it with a not very nice grimy film. The muck was especially bad around the hems of the jacket and sleeves. Really, I wouldn't have blamed my loved ones if they were a bit ashamed to be seen with me. It was bad. After realizing what a disgrace I had become I took that baby to my local discount drycleaners. They are miracle workers without question. The jacket is back to being it's lovely crisp red self and all for the low low price of $10. Some might say "Why yes, that's what you do when things are dirty, you clean them and they are nice again." and clearly I have grasped the wash it and make the dirt go away system, but I never thought the jacket was going to be quite the same. I am very pleased.:)

Last night I received my V-day gift from my  . I was very excited when I opened my new copy of the Pride and Prejudice DVD. I love the book, I love the movie and I love Colin Firth! A perfect gift. (I knew I made that Amazon Wish List for something! ;)

Terrific Tuesday

Tuesdays are usually crap -- right smack dab in the middle of the week with no end in sight. Not today though. Maybe it's because it is my 's b-day. Maybe because my good friend Bambi is coming to my office today to interview my awsome boss for a school project she is working on. Maybe it 's the suprisingly great Dunkin' Donuts coffee I had this morning (I didn't have a donut by some miracle!). I just don't know. But heck, I will take it.

In other news, there has been some family strife this past week I have been reluctant to report on. It would seem that clean cut 18 y/o brother Micah is suspected of stealing and crashing a car last year. This is something he absolutely would never do. An attorney has been called in and everyone is very tense. It's very scary to think that someone who is innocent can have their life disrupted this way. At this point I am done worrying (which I guess is why I am able to maintain my good mood today). I do however ask for prayers on his behalf. A great guy, who works with children and has a squeeky clean record deserves better.

Good Morning. On my way in to the office this morning, I saw the most amazing sunrise. It was was like fluffy slashes of blue, red, pink, apricot, and purple -- not unlike the image below. It undoubtedly brightened my morning and reminded me of how much beauty and possibility is available to me each day.

Not getting married...

Ok, hopefully someday but not in the near future. I have never in my life had so many people suggest that get hitched right this moment. First there was my Uncle who apparently informed the realtor we met with today that Flounder and I were on the brink of marriage. Then we had dinner with the Storybook Parents this evening. It seems that while I slipped out to the restroom Flounder's Mom inquired if we planned to wed! Good Lord people! I do love my Flounder a great deal, but what's the rush? 5 wonderful months does not a lifetime make. No, this time I prefer to let time tell.

Today's favorite thing: Twinings Variety Pack, I love the selection of Earl Grey, Prince of Wales, Lady Grey, English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast.

Seperate Adventure Saturday

My ever-so-wonderful and I are off to conquer our own individual To Do Lists today. I am off to get my tires replaced and wheels realigned. Of course I will be getting the hair cut I so desperately need. If I am lucky, I will accomplish a few other little tasks as well. My over arching job today however, is keeping Mi Mama company. We have has some serious family badness going down this week which has us all worried, but has hit Mi Mama especially hard. I am going to try to help!

Last night Flounder and I had a lovely (if very noisy) mexican dinner and a movie. Cold Mountain is a beautiful and wrenching film. I recommend it to all.

I think it's going to be a good day.

Things to be happy about

During high school I used to make a lot of lists of things to be happy about. Usually they were contained in Happy Notes -- little messages of encouragement and joy I would write for my friends. It's been awhile since I have put one of these together...I may be a little rusty, but here goes!

Things to be Happy About!
>Rediscovering a favorite childhood book
>Wireless Networks (whoo hoo for dueling laptops!)
>BBC's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
>White tea
>Online "stores" that sell great stuff such as Red Envelope, Uncommon Goods and Sundance Catalog
>A great big long weekend waiting for you when you leave work Friday evening

People blow my mind

The Fire Alarm just went off on my floor here at work. It totally blows my mind how willing people are just to sit at their desks and work while the alarm blares around them. I have the dubious honor of being a Fire Warden, which basicly means I have get a dorky hat, a flashlight and a list of people I am responsible for informing that they need to leave.

I am not sure where people develope the "this alarm doesn't apply to me" concept but getting people out of the building is like pulling teeth sometimes. Especailly after 9-11 (we have a whole preparedness plan for that sort of emergency) I am shocked by how complacent my co-workers can be. So meantime I get to be the annoying woman with the flashlight.

In other news, Saturday is Ice Cream for Breakfast Day! Mmmm....Ice Cream on Waffles....:)

The things you can do with duct tape!

I have long since known that adhesive tape is a wonderous thing. What would I do with out it at Christmas time? How would 10 year old boys give themselves piggy-snouts is not for Scotch tape and I am sure I would have broken my neck back stage during those HS shows if it weren't for that glow-in-the-dark tape the Techies used to keep our snotty selves safe. In the UMCP campus I learned that masking tape is an instant party game (limbo people!). Then of course these is the mother of all usefull tapes: DUCT TAPE. As my public service for the day I offer you this sight, which teaches you how to make a wallet out of duct tape. No need to buy those expensive duct tape wallets at the boutique anymore! Enjoy!

Perhaps the world isn't as bad as it has seemed lately. Everyday, babies are born, people fall in love and long lost wallets are returned.  The nice people are Sweden have given me hope. Not much else to say today really except that I accomplished nothing at all last night.

Oh, I forgot to mention I am reading The Secret Life of Bees. It is a wonderful book I highly recommend. GO READ IT!

Quote of the Day:
There will be storms, child
There will be storms
And with each tempest
You will seem to stand alone
Against cruel winds

But with time, the rage and fury
Shall subside
And when the sky clears
You will find yourself
Clinging to someone
You would have never known
But for storms.

Monday, Monday, Monday

My head hurts. Now that I think about it though, other than the Monday bit, and the headache bit, things are pretty dang good. I did some excellent work last Friday (though I did work late) which put me in good shape when I came in this morning. I had even managed to clean up my desk! The week ahead doesn't look that bad either. Except of course for the impending ice storm tomorrow...will it never end?

This coming weekend will mean birthday celebrations for Flounder, as well can getting a much needed hair cut as well as having my tires replaced. Mi Mama very kindly asked if she could celebrate his birthday and throw him a little lunch. It looks like she has caught on that I plan on keeping this one. :)

Action Plan. I have started it, but it need some more work for sure. I will go home tonight and work on it, I swear!

Last night I watched just about everything but the Super Bowl. How come I always miss out on all of the girly action that seems to be on TV these day? I have heard that several commentators have had negative things to say about how low the media seems to be stooping these day. Apparently, the Super Bowl broadcast was riddled with content that most would be embarrassed or distressed if their children were present. While I agree TV seems to be loosing it's grip on good taste, I think professional football broadcasts were one of the originators of bad taste on TV. Giant men beating the crap out of one another, mostly naked, big haired women jiggling on the sidelines? Not the best of images to show the kids in my opinion. End of rant.

Quote of the Day:
And Joy is Everywhere; It is in the Earth's green covering of grass; In the blue serenity of the Sky; In the reckless exuberance of Spring; In the severe abstinence of gray Winter; In the Living flesh that animates our bodily frame; In the perfect poise of the Human figure, noble and upright; In Living; In the exercise of all our powers; In the acquisition of Knowledge; in fighting evils... Joy is there Everywhere.

Crap!

I can't believe it is February already! I had grand plans to be a well pulled together person with a clean bedroom, organized paper work and an action plan. I have none of these things. Now what do I do? I will sit here and do some work before bed tonight. My latest favorite pastime seems to have become a lovely little game I call Dueling Laptops. This is where and I sit side by side on the couch and play on two different computers. Perhaps it seems like an odd thing for a not-yet-old couple to do, but it is suprisingly fun. Besides, how do you think I update this thing all the time.

Today I hung out with Mi Mama and we watched alot of Paula's Home Cooking. This is a show ont he Food Network that is dedicated to teaching you to make seriously good and seriously deadly southern food. Of course now I would kill for some good fried chicken. :) We laid plans for Flounder's birthday celebration and such. Good times.

Now it is time to do the Sunday night wind down. Sleep soon I think.

Do what you can,
with what you have,
where you are.
