Sleep Walking

Last night's concert was great. I didn't get home until after 1:00 am and I am dead on my feet.

Rufus Wainwright, while always enchanting, was not quite up to his usual standards. His voice and piano playing were in full form, but he was flying solo and I think he works better when he has a band (and harmonizing vocalists) to feed off of. Musicly of couse. Rufus the vampire? Interesting…any….Guster is a bad I had never heard of before the concert. They were rather entertaining I must say. It was clear that the majority of the audience (the college crowd) were fans and were rocking out. The REAL rocking started however when Ben Folds came out. F*ck the Five! Ben doesn't need 'em. Ben had total control of the crowd, using us as a brass section during one song, and back up singers in another. He has an Elton John like energy, but with out the Liberachi flair. I love the energy of live music. I think I was starting to miss it.

Also at the concert was E and her boy C, DK and his boy H (have I given him a name? I need to start a list for myself!) DK's Roomamtes T and A as well as a surprise visit from SMJW!  We missed out on J. Wo however. Sad.

I divulged to SMJW one of the many reasons I am a dork. I LOVE the concert sing-a-long. You know when the artist encourages the audience to fill in the blanks of their most popular songs? Love it! Can you imagine being a song writer and having an entire audience sing the words you wrote back to you? What a mind-blowing ego trip that must be. Ben Folds was all about it. My kind of performer!

Meanwhile, much to my surprise my brother, not knowing I wasn't going to be home last night was attempting to bring my the kitchen furniture Mi Mama was giving me. After several conversations with my brother and Mama shouted into my cell phone, he dropped the table and chairs in the backyard. I hauled in in the morning. The table is a prefect fit. Whoot!

Today is Micah's hearing. All prayers and well wishes are much appriciated.

Glorious!

What a gorgeous day outside! It is so wonderful out, it was tough not to call in sick as I was driving to the Metro. I rode in from Shady Grove (the farthest North stop on the red line). IT cost $3.90 EACH WAY and $3.25 to park! Highway robbery! That's a total of $11.05 a day, which is the same (well almost) as the cost of parking in my building. What's a girl to do?

Micah has his hearing tomorrow, so everyone say a prayer. I still have an outlandish faith that everything will turn out in the end. Perhaps I am deluding myself.

Other than the above, everything is pretty right in my world.   seemed to be having a grand time in CA when I talked to him last night. Heading off to some geeky reception my little jetsetter was. Go get 'em Honey!

I am attending the Rufus Wainwright/Ben Folds/Guster Concert tonight at Wolftrap. We have lawn seats, so much dinner is packed and I have my little foldy backsupport seat, which is a very good thing indeed. Sitting on the ground for that long would usually give me a sore back. I am not so happy about how late I will be arriving home tonight, especially since I left the house in such disarray last night...

Here's the story: Yesterday was book club. Before getting together, I went over to my apartment and packed a few things in a box, including some art from my bedroom and some new magazines that had come in the mail. Upon arriving home, I up my half-full travel mug in the box and headed for the house. The not so airtight mug over turns in the box and soaks everything with day old Hazelnut coffee! Big, frustrating ICK! So I spent 30 minutes cleaning that up and trying to save my art (which I think it ok) and when I was done there was no energy left for the dishes in the sink, the trash that need to be taken out or the plants that needed watering. So I left them. Sadly no kitchen fairy came by in the night. This morning the mess was still there, but I didn't have time to clean it up because I have to pack dinner for the concert and such. When I arrive home tonight at 1:00 am, I am sure the mess will still be there. I pray the ants don't find it! Actualy Flounder has done a number on the ants. I think they might just stay away (fingers crossed!).

Finally,   it was lovely meeting you last night! I hope we can do it again sometime, even if the bookclub doesn't survive!

Making with the productive

This weekend was rather productive...though it moved at a more leisurely pace than the last few weekends. Items were bought, pictures and shelves were hung, and in general the place was cleaned up.

It became sadly clear that I am going to have to paint the ceiling in the green room. Also, the more time I send in that room, the more touch up the green needs. Very Frustrating! I still plan to have it done before   comes home from his trip next Saturday.

Sunday morning I dropped Flounder off at the airport at 7:00 in the morning -- which meant waking at 5:00 am. This early hour at first seemed like the utter embodiment of cruelty. But then at 8:00 am sitting with Mi Mama having bagels and a good chat, I started to remember the joys of being an earlier riser. If you have gotten enough sleep, it can be a glorious thing. The roads are empty, and the world is your oyster! With so many hours spread out ahead of you, what can't you accomplish? This zeal for day break didn't last very long however, since I had NOT gotten enough sleep. Around three in the afternoon, I punked out for a nap. It was a good thing...I was getting a wee bit cranky.

That evening, I was graced with the company of the lovely Red. We got to catch up over faitas, brownies and Trading Spaces. Very good times!

A week without Flounder

Starting this Sunday,   will be going out of town, leaving all by my lonesome. He will be living it up at a conference in all his geeky glory in San Fran, while I sit alone. That's not totally true...the sitting alone part that is. I already have plans for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of next week. It just so happens that book club and a previously planned concert have been scheduled to my advantage. I also have high hopes of doing lots of useful things around the house next week so I can WOW him upon his return on the 2nd.

Tomorrow, after much sleeping in, Flounder and I are going SHOPPING! I plan on picking up this organizer for the cleaning closet, and this candle simply because I have been coveting it for some time now. It is oh, so lovely. For Flounder there will be new summer clothes (WHOOT!) and for us both a trip to Home Depot.

Now for other musings:
A lot of people in my life are moving. E. is moving in with her BF, J.Wo is going to Sweden, Red is returning from England, and of course there is Flounder and I. What have really begun to amaze me is how much STUFF we all have. I am by far one of the worst offenders and to be fair, Flounder is probably the least guilty of us all. The dreaded conumerism that draws me in! I am a sucker for a pretty package or a slick promise. At the same time I yern to live a simplified existance without all of the consumer trappings and mass-marketed goods. The problem is, can I be cute and trendy (which to be honest, I am not really now...) AND avoid the disposable lifestyle foisted upon us by the media? How can one keep only what they need, while being perfectly accessorized? Gah to the contradictions!

Update

Yesterday was Mi Mama's birthday. Being such a wonderful person, her coworkers took her out to lunch. Today it was my turn. We went to Vidalia and OH, it was good. So full.

I plan on spending most of my work day organizing. I realized recently that I need to work on developing new systems I can keep up with to help keep me organized. Simple systems. Lots of 'em.

Now I sally forth, to face the organizational disaster I have created.

Schlepping

This entry could just an easily been called "More reasons why is a gem"!

Saturday morning I awoke at 6:30 in order to ensure that I would be ready to be a J.Wo's at 8:00 am to help Red move furniture out of J.Wo's condo and into Flounder's basement. J. Wo is leaving the country, Red is returning to the US so a furniture swap was in order...Flounder's basement will be a holding pen until September.

What a day. It was full of mishaps, lugging, and help from Signe (and Hubby), Red's Daddy, J.Wo's new Bo and of course the steadfast Flounder. Once we loaded the trailer to the brim with furniture, Red and I drove to G-town to unload. This was difficult, though uneventful work until it came time to get the couch down the basement stairway. Signe's Hubby (I can't remember if I named him before...let's call him C.) and Flounder tried to puzzle the sofa through the doorway leading down stair for quite some time and we eventually had to admit it just wasn't happening. Then it dawned on us. We were going to go get my bed from my apartment (to put in the master bedroom) why not store the couch in the bed's place? Brilliant!

So the couch goes back in the trailer. Once at my apartment; bed went out, my big red chair went out, but the couch (of Doom!) was not be be fit in the bedroom either. It wouldn't even go down the hallway. Finally we decided that the second couch in the livingroom would go in the bedroom and the couch of doom would live in the living room for the next few months. Then we crossed our fingers that KT wouldn't mind. We later found out she was quite understanding.

As you can imagine more loading and unloading insued before the day was out. There was also a very amusing little happenstance involving Red and I trying to diconnect the trailer from the hitch in a shopping center parking lot which I will save for another day. When I finally arrived home I collapesed, dragged my stiff self into a bath and was generally a lump in my new comfy bed that night.

Sunday, Flounder and I cleaned out his old apartment in the morning and went to my Dad's house in the afternoon. This was the first time my father and Flounder met and it went quite well. Dad was on his best behavior (he is often borish, crude and drunk, but not today) and Flounder was delightful. I couldn't have asked for the intoduction to go better. We had some hamburgers and ducked out a little early.

Other non-interesting and productive things were done, the most important being that we now have DSL service. Whoot!

This was one of the more exhausting weekends I have had in awhile. I do believe I am going to do more dilly-dallying next weekend in order to makeup for it.

Carmel Krispy Kreme?

This morning I thought I would indulge in a donut. My office caters a free donut and bagel breakfast on Fridays. I saw a nice looking donut with some stuff stuck to the stop that looked especially yummy. I took this confection back to my desk. I took a bite. That was when I discovered that this donut was filled with CARMEL and the carmel filler had erupted like Mount St. Helen all over the front of my blouse.

After scraping as much of the filler off my top as I could, I went to the bathroom and washed it out the sink. Now, I am wearing a damp shirt...but at least most of the carmel came out. Beware the offending Carmel Kreme Crunch!

I know I have been talking about the house a lot lately and the work load that goes along with it. Given all my whining up until now, you can probably forsee that there is a ton to do this weekend and not enough time to complete it in. I will report back with a progress report on Monday!

Ah, Kauai!

I am very excited! Found a website with wallpaper photos from my very favorite place in the world, Kauai! Most of the photos are of the north shore where my family and I stayed when we were there this time last year. How I miss it! Ke'e beach is the first beach we visited, marking the first time I ever set foot in the Pacific! To be perfectly honest, these photos only begin to capture the beauty!

Kauai Images

Last night I made some headway. I touched up the paint in the master bedroom with Warm Muffin and scaped some old chewing gum off the laundryroom floor. Yes, there was an old piece of gum left by the previous owners. Please, just don't even ask.

Also, it seems as though Verison thinks it's funny to taunt   by insinuating we have DSL, when in fact we don't. Anyone who knows Flounder will realize that for him, internet access is no laughing matter! They sent us the modem package, which Flounder tried to set up, only to find out order was still "pending". Nice.

Rhapsodizing

While there are lots of things about the new house that we would love to change (like the nonfunctioning ceiling fans, holes in the walls and small ant problem...) I can happily say that the bathtub and shower head in the main bathroom on the second floor are lovely. They aren't some amazing luxury models, however they ample in proportion and sturdy. Very Pleasing. The new shower curtian we put up this weekend is aborable and very fun. The bathroom also has a huge medicine cabinate (with 4 doors!) that honestly is a bit outsized for the room -- but I dig all the roomy storage. So that is a happy thing.

I went back to my apartment last night to pick up a few things and after putting them away in the new house, I pretty much punked out. I am hoping to accomplish more tonight, especially since I just realized that this Sunday is Father's Day and I am going to have to make an appearance at Dad's house. Ugh! That is going to be like a quarter of time out of my action packed weekend.

Tuesday

Yess was quite the dynamo yesterday. She went grocery shopping, cooked dinner as well as several other dished (and froze them for later), painted the fan, did the first coat of paint in the trim in the green room and repotted our new house plants. I greatly doubt that I would have accomplished so much if I had been left home alone in someone elses house.

Having such a whirrling dervish of energy around has inspired me. I have compiled quite the list of tasks to get done by the end of the weekend. Including: Finishing the trim in the green room, moving my bed and various other belonging into the house, cleaning the old apartment (with the help of   of course!), hanging the newly painted fan blades, and much more.

Other news I had forgotten to impart -- the court has set a date for Micah's first hearing for June 30th. We are still dealing with the juvenile court system which is a VERY good thing. There is still a chance that the judge with say there isn't enough evidence and toss the whole matter out. God, I hope he does.

And today means lunch with KT, the roommate I never see. Hurrah!

NEW HOUSE!

is all moved in! On Saturday the movers came and brought all the furniture to the new house. I was shocked and quite pleased by how well Flounder's couches, dining room table and chairs fit. The Guest Room (also known as the green room) is all set up with Flounder's current bed and dresser. The Server Room (Yes, we have a server room!) is set up as well. Amazingly he is even mostly unpacked! The next step will be moving all my junk in -- which will probably be coming in drips and drabs over the next few months, with the majority of the furniture showing up in early September.

I heart Satalite TV. Oh yeah, we have Fine Living, DIY, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, BBC America, ALL the Discovery Channels, multiple History Channels and Oxygen -- plus a million other channels. Oxygen is cool because the Ellen show at 11:00 pm if I am desperate to see that days episode. Whoot!

As one might expect we made runs to IKEA (second time this month!), Target and Home Depot. Poor Flounder. So much spending, so little time.

Also Yess came down yesterday and is hanging out at the house today. Since she is such an industrious, projecting fool, we left her with some possible projects. It's kind of fun, not knowing what might be done to the place while you are away. She might touch up the green room, paint the little bedroom, hang curtains, cook, re-pot the plants we bought at IKEA, or none of the above (which would of course be just fine). It certainly gives me something to look forward to at the end of the day.

So this weekend was quite full and has left me wuite sleepy and fuzzy headed this morning. I am hoping that coffee and getting back on the good eatting bandwagon will help me with my energy level this morning.

Baby Face

It's gotten to the point that I just can't help myself. It's practically a compulsion.

When I see a young child or baby, I have to wave, make faces or generally goof around until that kid smiles at me. Most parents take my attention as a testament to their childs adorable nature and encourge the child to smile. And usually in the back of my mind I am thinking that am I encouraging these great and vulnerable little people to talk to strangers? Lord I hope not.

In the meantime I view my instinctive reaction to sweet little babys as my biological clock reminding me that these are my child bareing years. I will have to send my biological clock a memo. RE: Babies, I am not ready yet.

is home today. He will be moving boxes, packing, unpacking and getting ready for the movers tomorrow. Even after accepting that I wouldn't be able to finish the painting before the move, still there seems like a lot to do. Many are odd little things I rarely think about like cleaning out the microwave, and washing down the doors of the kitchen cabinates which have an unappealing stickiness to them. Still lots to do... but we are getting closer.

I took a Chance

I went over to the local makeup store to pick up some concealer on my lunch hour. I make a bee line straight for the Clinique display. I was looking for the correct shade (mysteriously missing!) when I was asked if I needed help. Like a fool I said yes. The gentleman offering me help looked unexpectantly like one of Red's exboyfriends (the much rued P.) only about a foot taller. Before I knew it, he had me in the chair and was schooling me in the joy that is Chanel. Yeah, that's right. This is the big time Honey. I actually learned some good stuff. I also spent $75.00 on new foundation and concealer. The gentleman who helped me, a mister Tyson Baker (I sware that must be a stage name or something!) was very nice, helpful and seemed to enjoy his job. The kicker for me was when I noticed he was wearing mascara. Gotta give a man credit who can pull off mascara in the middle the day.  Before I hopped out of the chair, I got a little spritz of Chanel Chance. Good stuff that.

So anyway, I realize that this little interlude was far funnier to me at the time than it is to you now, but there you go.

Prince Flounder

I have a really great boyfriend. REALLY stupendously great.

I started last evening in good spirits. I went to my apartment, packed up a box of books, identified my suggestion for next month's book club, dropped off some donations that had been wasting away in my car's trunk for several months, grabbed some dinner and went to an appointment. I am not sure when the tide of my mood turned, but by the time I got to  's last night, I was down right grumpy. I was displeased with the state of our packing effort, and the general mayhem that is moving. Overwhlemed by the amount of painting, packing and moving left to do. I was whining about going back to school (which is impending and getting closer by the second). And freaking out over all the negitive emotions that go along with taking that step. And to top it all off, I was restless.

Flounder was a prince. Kind, reassuring, supportive and above all patient. I really don't deserve him, I sware.

I started back on drinking lots of water yesterday. Good Lord. I have made 5 trips to the loo today. Totally redic. I am well aware that this is not the kind of info anyone wants...but I needed to whine.

*toast* Cheers! Bottoms up!

So close and yet so far...

OK, I think you have probably figured out that WW is not going very well for me at the moment. It's not that WW is failing (the system is great!), I have just not been working it. So today I am going to get back on the wagon by writing down my points again. I sware, writing them down makes all the difference for me. you can't argue with the numbers. At this point I have gained back one pound of the 6 I had perviously lost. No more back sliding for me. Onward and downward.

Tonight I am going by my apartment and packing up some books. Thankfully, my bedroom is nice and clean. I pulled it together before Memorial Day because KT was having friends in and I volunteered my bed. So, unless they are animals (certainly not!), I should have a neat room waiting for me. A nice change of place since both 's apartment and new house aredisaster areas. Not his fault of course, just the state of things.

I also need to make some lists today. I have a lot of "To Dos" and Project ideas
floating around in my head. It always helps me get clarity when I put pen to paper.

Paint and Potter

I knew I was out of shape. I knew I was no where near reaching my fitness potential, but this weekend it hit home. I spent 16 hours painting this weekend and my pitiful muscles are not happy. After we wrapped up last night, I was SOO stiff and sore, it was sad. Moving off the couch, cleaning the bathroom, taking a bath, rustling up dinner were all monumental tasks. The good news here is that I am much improved (if still a bit sore) this morning. I am rather proud of   and myself. With help from Mi Mama, J.Wo and Signe, we painted 2 rooms (3 coats in one, 2 coats in another). Flounder also did a bit of demolition in the basement, and scraped out the old caulk in the master bathroom's shower and prepared the space for re caulking. The larger guest room is now Malard green (bold and gorgous!) and the masterbed room is Warm Muffin (Cozy and well, warm!). V. nice. This week, I have baseboards and trim to paint and a bit of touch up in bothrooms. The carpet guys come Tuesday and the movers Saturday. Needless to say there is still a lot to do, but we are feeling pretty good about ourselves.

BEWARE! I AM ABOUT TO DISCUSS THE NEW HARYY POTTER MOVIE!
Do not read on if you are afraid of spoilers!

This weekend we managed to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In general, it is 100 times better than the previous 2 films. No question. There was some really vital explination regarding Lupin, Snape, Black and Harry's father that could have quickly and simply handled...but instead they just left it out...v. bad. Visually it was much more sophisticated. With all those bright saturated colors, the first two films were more like cartoons in tone than live action films. And Wow! Are those kids actually learning to act? Even Rupert Grint (Ron) spent less time making twist faces. In general, I was just thrilled.

This week is going to be non-stop house prep. Helping Flounder pack and get the new place ready. I know I so ready to get out of the "in between" faze you always get when moving.

Mallard and Warm Muffin

Last night we went out to Home Depot (it's like our home away from home at this point!) and bought paint and paint supplies for our painting adventure this weekend. Of course we forgot something (sandpaper) and will be back tonight. So far we have been shuttleing books over in the car in the evening. Most of  's stuff can fall into the catagories of Little Books, Big Books, Furniture, or Computer equipment. Granted, he also has toiletries, clothes and dishes like everyone does but everything else falls under the catagories above. Since there is a set of large built-in book shelves in the livingroom, we figured books were the best choice to sneak over first. Gotta keep those floors clear for the carpet cleaners to come next week. Meanwhile JWSM got started with the cleaning yesterday and will wrap up tomorrow. Tonight I am going to try to clear the basement of anything dangerous that J.S. could get into, since JWSM had the little one with her yesterday. The previous owners left some rather sharp and rusty things (sawblade anyone?) behind. Do you think you can sweap nails off carpet? Hmmm...

Also, I was reflecting this weekend on how great Mi Mama is. We have a great relationship and I can honestly say just thinking about what I will do when she has passed on can bring me to tears. However, what I was marveling at was her persistance. Her drive. The fact that despite early hardship after my parents divorce, she rasied her kids in a great community. She has singlehandedly supported our family and became a homeowner. Working on this new house has helped me to understand the sort of pride people take in a house they own. Mind you, I don't own this house...but all the same. I marvel.

Memorial Day Weekend

To call this past weekend action packed would be an understatement. I think I can speak for   and say we were both a bit overwhelmed when we did a walk through of Flounder's new house with the former owner Sunday morning. You see, Flounder isn't really handy. I am slightly better...but not by much. The thin thread that divides us? I know how to spackle and paint. Yep, we are pretty sad. But like the troopers we are, we have already starting to tackle some of the smaller projects. Spackleing and such.

This week we are having J.Wo's sister (mother to S.J. for those payine attention) here after called JWSM -- come and clean the house. Yahoo! I love win-win situations!

This coming weekend we (and some very kind friends) will be painting at least two of the bedrooms, and maybe the third if we do a quick job of it. The carpet cleaners will come next week and then Flounder moved in officially on the 12th. So exciting. Per Mi Mamas suggestion, we are trying to focus on one room at a time, which really just means that we won't be doing much with the finished basement in the short term.

Honestly my mind is awhirl with all that need to be done, and focusing on work today is pretty tough, but I need to buckle down now. Focus, FOCUS!
